Caffeine, which is commonly extracted from coffee has been demonstrated to enhance athletic performance, promote higher metabolism and support brain health. Research has shown the connection between moderate caffeine intake could lower the risk of mortality.
Caffeine works as a replacement to adenosine that ensure nervous system does not become over excited. Caffeine mimics this chemical, but in reverse. Whenever adenosine and caffeine target the same receptor site, caffeine wins. When caffeine targets receptors, dopamine is often released. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is known to activate the pleasure centres of the brain. It also improves concentration and attention. This is helpful in terms of cognitive function.
- Increased alertness. This benefit is only short-lived, and the effects decrease after the second consumption. This why many drink coffee in the morning, it gives you that extra mental boost.
- Neuroprotective properties. In a study, 80% of regular coffee drinkers were less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease.
- Improved mental performance. Lowering the chance of getting distracted.
Caffeine is usually combined with L-Theanine in the ratio of 1:2. L-Theanine is found within green tea, helping to counteract some of the potential side-effects of caffeine. It helps to reduce restlessness and anxiety which is sometimes caused by caffeine.
The recommended dose of caffeine is 1-2 capsules (100-200mg) per day. Do not take more than 600 mg in day.
